What makes a good start page?

Start pages should be succinct and direct as users will want to get on with their application.

Avoid cramming lots of information onto the page as this will make it less likely that users will read it. Instead, think about what other planning content you have on your website and whether any content is better suited to those pages. For example, information about different types of application.

Creating a start page

Talk to the council team that manages your website. They may already have start page patterns you can use and will be able to help with publishing the page.

If not, the ODP team has created start page templates to help you get started. These are based on best practice and have been tested and refined following user research.
